You usually do not need a GP referral to book a podiatrist privately in Australia. A referral may matter if you have an eligible chronic condition and want to access Medicare-subsidised allied health care through a GP chronic condition management plan. An online doctor can assess your history, but some foot problems need examination in person.

When should I see a podiatrist?

Podiatrists assess and treat problems involving feet, ankles and lower limbs. Common reasons to book include heel pain, recurring ankle discomfort, ingrown toenails, changes in walking, nail problems or footwear concerns. They may also advise on orthotics and pressure management.

For some problems, you can contact a podiatrist directly. If symptoms are unexplained, severe or associated with a wider medical condition, a GP assessment may help determine whether podiatry, imaging or another clinician is more appropriate.

Do I need a referral to see a podiatrist?

Usually, no. Most patients can book a private podiatry appointment without a GP letter. This differs from seeing a medical specialist for a Medicare-rebatable specialist consultation. As healthdirect explains, referral is mainly relevant to certain Medicare-supported pathways, including eligible chronic condition care.

If you are paying privately or using private health insurance, ask the podiatry practice or insurer about their own requirements before paying for a separate GP visit.

Can Medicare help with podiatry for diabetes or chronic illness?

Eligible patients with chronic conditions may receive Medicare rebates for certain allied health services when care is arranged under a GP chronic condition management plan (GPCCMP) and a valid referral. The current program generally permits up to five eligible individual allied health services per calendar year in total, shared across relevant disciplines; it is not five visits per provider type.

Your regular treating team should assess whether a plan is appropriate and clinically useful. Care-plan preparation and Medicare billing have separate eligibility requirements. Previous GP management plans and team care arrangements have transitional provisions. See Services Australia’s overview and the allied health billing rules.

When is in-person assessment especially important?

New loss of sensation, an open wound, spreading redness, significant swelling, inability to bear weight or suspected infection may require physical examination. A person with diabetes who develops a new foot ulcer or a red, hot or swollen foot should seek urgent in-person medical assessment, not wait for a routine podiatry booking.

A video consultation cannot assess circulation, protective sensation or the depth of a wound accurately. A doctor may direct you to your regular GP, a podiatrist or urgent services depending on the symptoms.

What happens during an online foot-health consultation?

The doctor asks about the location and duration of pain, any injury, mobility, medical conditions, previous care and whether you have warning signs. Past reports, test results or care plans are helpful. They may discuss a podiatry appointment, an in-person examination, or whether chronic condition care planning should occur through your regular practice.

A referral or care plan is not guaranteed, and a telehealth appointment may not satisfy the requirements for a Medicare-funded plan.
