Medical documentation for a school absence
A medical certificate can support a school absence when a student is unwell, but it is not required for every missed day. Check your school's instructions and Doccio's age eligibility before requesting an assessment. A parent or carer should explain the situation accurately, and the student may need to participate. The doctor decides whether online assessment and the requested documentation are appropriate.
What the certificate may include
- The student's identifying details and the relevant absence dates.
- The issuing doctor's name and professional details.
- The assessment and issue dates with appropriate clinical wording.
- A Doccio verification reference, without unnecessary consultation detail.
Discuss any requested return-to-school, activity or medication instructions separately. A standard absence document does not automatically address those questions.
When documentation may be useful
- The school has specifically requested medical evidence of an illness-related absence.
- An illness has affected an assessment, examination or scheduled school activity.
- A parent needs advice about which medical documentation is appropriate.
- The student needs assessment as well as an explanation of the absence.
A school absence certificate and a parent's carer's leave certificate serve different purposes. Tell the doctor when both are being requested.
How it works

Ask the school
establish whether a parent explanation or medical document is needed.
Check service eligibility
confirm that the student's age and situation fit the service.
Complete an appropriate assessment
provide symptoms, dates and relevant background.
Submit any issued document
follow the school's attendance or assessment process.
School attendance and medical evidence
Requirements vary
School attendance is governed by education rules and local procedures, not the workplace sick-leave framework. Ask the school what it needs before arranging paid documentation.
For example, NSW public-school procedures allow a principal to grant sick leave without a certificate, while permitting further evidence in particular circumstances. This is an example, not a universal rule for every Australian school.
The student's health comes first
Do not treat a certificate as proof that a child has received every assessment they need. Explain symptoms and changes carefully. An online conversation may need to be followed by examination or urgent care, particularly when a child appears significantly unwell. Healthdirect explains the limits of virtual care.
An absence certificate is not always a clearance
Questions about contagious illness, sports participation or returning after an injury may require specific advice. Bring the school's instructions rather than assuming a certificate for missed days confirms that every activity is now safe.
Repeated absences need a wider conversation
When attendance is affected over time, speak with the school and the student's usual clinician about what support is needed. A succession of brief documents may not address the underlying problem, adjustments or a continuing care plan.
The clinician also needs to consider consent, the student's involvement and appropriate information-sharing. The AMA's certificate guidance explains general principles of factual certification and confidentiality.
Pricing and eligibility
Where a standard request is appropriate, one-day requests cost $19 and two-day requests $29. Longer or more detailed assessments need a consultation at $59 during business hours or $79 after hours. Confirm age eligibility and the required document before paying.
Every certificate is verifiable
Employers and institutions can confirm a Doccio certificate in seconds at doccio.com.au/verify, seeing only the details needed to confirm it's genuine.
