Online weight management, with a doctor

An online weight-management consultation lets you discuss your weight and health with an Australian-registered doctor. Doccio offers an individual assessment, not a promised result or a one-size-fits-all program. Your doctor can review what has changed, consider relevant health concerns and discuss sensible next steps. That might involve ongoing support, investigations, an in-person examination or another clinician's input, depending on your circumstances and the information available during your appointment.

When telehealth may help

  • You want to discuss weight changes and understand which factors deserve assessment.
  • Previous approaches have been difficult to maintain and you would like individual advice.
  • You can share relevant medical history, medicines and recent measurements.
  • You need help setting realistic goals around health, function or ongoing support.
  • You are reviewing an existing plan and can provide information about your progress.

When online care may not be enough

  • A physical examination or reliable measurements are needed before decisions are made.
  • You have unexplained weight changes or other symptoms requiring investigation.
  • Eating, exercise or body-image concerns need a dedicated eating-disorder assessment.
  • Your circumstances require coordinated specialist or multidisciplinary care.
  • You need a service or intervention that cannot be provided through telehealth.

When telehealth is not the right place

Some weight management symptoms need in-person or emergency care. If any of these apply, don't book online:

  • Prompt assessment: rapid, unexplained weight loss.
  • Prompt assessment: ongoing difficulty eating or drinking.
  • Prompt assessment: bingeing, purging or significant dietary restriction.
  • Urgent care: fainting, severe weakness or dehydration.
  • Emergency care: chest pain, severe breathlessness or collapse - call 000.

Call 000 in an emergency.

For urgent but non-life-threatening advice call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 (24 hours), or go to your nearest emergency department. Doccio doctors will always tell you if a request should be seen in person.

Check your BMI and set a realistic goal

These tools use the same measures your doctor will talk through. They are a guide, not a diagnosis — BMI does not directly measure body fat or explain your overall health.

How your consultation works

01

Explain your priorities

Tell the doctor what concerns you, what has changed and what you hope to understand.

02

Review your health

Discuss your history, current medicines, previous approaches and relevant measurements or results.

03

Agree on the next step

Consider an appropriate plan, including any checks or additional professional support needed first.

04

Arrange follow-up

Clarify what to monitor, when to review the plan and which symptoms need earlier attention.

What your consultation can cover

  • Your goals: whether your priorities involve wellbeing, mobility, health risks, weight maintenance or another concern.
  • Your history: previous weight changes, medical conditions, medicines and experiences with earlier approaches.
  • Your circumstances: work, sleep, eating patterns, activity, finances and practical barriers to change.
  • Further assessment: whether an examination, measurements or clinically indicated investigations would add useful information.
  • Available approaches: the benefits, limitations and suitability of different forms of support for your circumstances.
  • A review plan: how you will assess progress, ask questions and decide whether the approach needs changing.

Understanding weight management

Weight is influenced by more than willpower

Weight can be affected by genetics, medicines, health conditions, sleep, environment and daily routines. A change on the scales does not explain its own cause. The starting point is a conversation about your circumstances, rather than an assumption about effort or motivation. Healthdirect's obesity overview explains these influences and associated health concerns.

Bring a timeline if it helps: when changes began, what else was happening and which approaches you have already tried. You do not need a perfect food diary or a completed fitness program to ask for medical advice.

Measurements inform the assessment

Body mass index, or BMI, is a screening measure calculated from height and weight. It does not directly measure body fat, and it has limitations in pregnancy, older age and people with substantial muscle mass. Your doctor may consider other information, including waist measurements, blood pressure and relevant results. See Healthdirect's explanation of weight assessment.

The purpose of collecting information is to guide decisions. It is not to turn a single number into a diagnosis of your entire health or a predetermined treatment recommendation.

Sustainable support should fit your life

Appropriate changes need to be practical enough to continue. An eating plan should meet nutritional needs, while activity should account for your mobility and health. Restrictive plans promising rapid changes are not the same as individualised medical care. Healthdirect's dieting guidance discusses sustainable approaches and the role of a dietitian.

Ask which changes matter most, what alternatives exist and how progress will be reviewed. A plan that ignores your work, caring responsibilities or budget may not be useful to you.

Follow-up matters

Weight management can require ongoing support rather than a single appointment. The RACGP's guidance supports an individual approach that considers health, circumstances and continuing care.

At Doccio, discuss who will coordinate your care and whether your usual GP should be involved. Pathology requests and specialist referrals are considered when appropriate, not included automatically because you book a weight-management consultation.
