Hours and after-hours care in VIC

Doctor care is available 8am–6pm Mon–Fri (AEST/AEDT) at the standard rate. Outside that window the same consultation is handled at the after-hours rate, and requests are still reviewed by an Australian-registered doctor.

Victoria keeps the same clock as Sydney, so those hours are your local hours all year.

Using Doccio in Victoria

What it's like here

Victoria is compact by Australian standards but demand on general practice is not evenly spread, and appointment waits differ a lot between the inner suburbs, the outer growth corridors and the regional cities. Telehealth suits the requests that do not need an examination.

Prescriptions and pharmacies

Prescriptions are issued as electronic prescriptions. You receive a link by SMS and show it at any pharmacy in Victoria that dispenses electronic prescriptions, which is now the great majority of them. Nothing needs to be posted, and you can use the same link at a different pharmacy if the first one cannot fill it.

Certificates and employers

Victorian employers, TAFEs and universities accept an ordinary medical certificate as evidence for an absence. Doccio certificates carry a verification reference, so an employer who wants to confirm one can do so without seeing your health information.

When to be seen in person instead

Telehealth is not the right choice for everything. If you need to be examined, have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, or are worried about someone's safety, get care in person. Victoria runs Priority Primary Care Centres and Medicare Urgent Care Clinics for urgent problems that are not emergencies, and they take walk-ins in most cases.
