You can usually book an accredited practising dietitian privately without a GP referral. A doctor’s referral may help if you have an eligible chronic condition and want Medicare-subsidised dietetic appointments through a GP chronic condition management plan. Online doctors can discuss your health concerns, but care plans and rebates depend on clinical assessment and specific Medicare requirements.

When might a dietitian help?

Dietitians provide evidence-based nutrition care for people managing conditions that can be affected by food and eating patterns. Reasons for seeking support can include diabetes, digestive symptoms, cardiovascular risk, food-related restrictions and concerns about nutritional adequacy.

They can also support weight-management care without relying on restrictive or stigmatising advice. The right approach depends on your health history, preferences, circumstances and any medical conditions that need separate investigation.

Do I need a GP referral to see a dietitian?

Usually not for a private appointment. You can contact a dietitian directly, confirm their qualifications, explain your goals and ask about costs. A GP referral can nevertheless be useful when your nutritional needs form part of broader medical management or when Medicare allied health eligibility needs to be assessed.

If you have warning symptoms such as persistent unexplained weight loss, bleeding or difficulty swallowing, arrange appropriate medical assessment rather than assuming dietary advice is the only treatment required.

When does Medicare cover dietitian services?

Eligible patients with chronic conditions may access dietetic services under a GP chronic condition management plan (GPCCMP) and an appropriate referral. The current Medicare pathway generally allows up to five individual allied health services per calendar year in total across eligible provider types, not five per dietitian.

You must meet the applicable patient, plan, referral and service requirements. Existing older care plans can have transitional arrangements. The Services Australia overview and allied health billing guidance explain the current rules; rebates should be checked for your actual appointment rather than assumed.

Can a telehealth GP prepare a chronic condition care plan?

An online consultation may be useful for discussing your diagnosis, care history, existing clinicians and possible needs. Whether a GPCCMP can be prepared or reviewed using a particular telehealth service, and whether any Medicare rebate applies, depends on detailed conditions including appropriate continuity of care.

The doctor may direct you to your regular GP or arrange further investigation before discussing a plan. A referral or care plan is not guaranteed just because you ask for one.

What should I bring to a dietitian or GP appointment?

It can help to have relevant diagnoses, recent blood test results, previous dietary advice, a list of current health conditions and a clear idea of what you want to improve. You do not need to arrive with a perfect food diary or a specific weight goal.

Tell your clinician if eating is distressing, your food access is limited or you have experienced disordered eating. These details can help shape care that is practical, respectful and clinically suitable.
