Short answer

No. A photograph or scan of a paper prescription is not automatically a valid electronic prescription. A genuine eScript is created through a conformant prescribing system and accessed using a token or another supported method. Ask the pharmacy what it can lawfully accept before relying on a photo for supply. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance Australian Digital Health Agency prescribing guidance

The format reflects how the prescription was created

An electronic prescription is a legal prescription generated and transmitted through the electronic prescribing system. The SMS, email or printed token provides access to it. A photo is simply an image of an existing document and does not change how that document was issued. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

This distinction can be confusing because both may be viewed on a phone. The screen is not what determines validity. The pharmacist needs to identify the underlying prescribing authority and satisfy the relevant requirements for dispensing.

What if the paper prescription has a barcode?

A barcode on a paper prescription does not automatically turn it into a token-based electronic prescription. Paper prescription barcodes can support electronic transfer of information while the paper document remains the prescription that must be handled under the relevant rules. If unsure, tell the pharmacist exactly what you have: the original paper, a photo, an SMS token or an email from the clinic. Do not crop the document to a barcode and assume it will work like an eScript. The pharmacist can explain what needs to be presented.

Can I send a photo ahead to a pharmacy?

A pharmacy may use information sent ahead for administrative preparation or to clarify what you need, but that does not automatically mean it can dispense solely from the image. Ask about its process and the legal requirements before travelling or arranging collection. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance Australian Digital Health Agency prescribing guidance

Follow the pharmacy's approved communication method. Avoid sending personal health information to an unverified number or social media account. Confirm whether you still need to bring the original document and whether the medicine is available.

What if the original paper prescription is lost?

Contact the prescribing clinic and explain what happened. Have the patient's details, approximate issue date and any dispensing history ready. The clinician or pharmacy may need to establish whether the prescription has already been used and what replacement process is appropriate.

Do not use an old image to obtain duplicate supplies or ask multiple clinics for replacements without explaining the situation. If new prescribing is needed, the doctor must assess whether it remains appropriate. An administrative loss does not remove that responsibility. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

Is a screenshot of an eScript token different?

A screenshot may contain a genuine electronic prescription token, but it still needs to be current and readable. An old token may already have been dispensed or replaced by the next repeat token. The pharmacist checks the underlying prescription rather than assuming every saved image remains usable. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

If the token cannot be accessed, contact the original prescriber for an undispensed original token or the last dispensing pharmacy for a lost repeat token. Read recovering an eScript token before arranging an unnecessary new assessment.

What should I request for future appointments?

Tell the clinician which prescription delivery method you can use. If an electronic prescription is appropriate and available, confirm the mobile number or email address before it is sent. If you need a printed token or help without a smartphone, raise that at the start. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

Keep the latest token and understand how repeats will be provided. If you receive a paper prescription instead, ask how it should be taken to the pharmacy and stored after dispensing. Clear instructions can prevent a last-minute assumption that a photograph is sufficient.

Doccio's prescription service sends an eScript when a doctor decides prescribing is appropriate. Read how eScripts work for the full process, and check uncertain documents directly with a pharmacist before relying on them.
