Short answer

An eScript follows the same legal validity rules as a paper prescription of the same type. Expiry depends on the medicine, prescription and applicable state or territory requirements. Ask the pharmacist to check your actual prescription; an SMS remaining on your phone does not mean the prescription is still valid. There is no separate digital expiry rule

Electronic prescribing changes how a prescription is created and accessed, not the underlying requirements for lawful supply. A token is a way to retrieve the prescription. It does not extend its life or replace the pharmacist's checks. Avoid applying a single internet rule to every medicine or jurisdiction. Some categories have different requirements, and rules can change. The safest practical answer comes from checking the particular prescription with a pharmacist who can see its details and the applicable dispensing requirements.

Expiry and repeats are different limits

A prescription may have repeats remaining but still reach the end of its validity. Conversely, it may be within its validity period but have no repeats left. Both questions matter when deciding whether another supply can occur. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance Australian Digital Health Agency prescribing guidance

Ask the pharmacist to clarify which issue applies. Saying only that the script does not work can lead to the wrong next step. You may need a replacement token, a new assessment, clarification from the prescriber or another action depending on the actual reason.

The message date can be misleading

You may receive a repeat token after the original prescription date. That later message is not necessarily a new prescription with a fresh validity period. It may simply provide access to the next authorised repeat under the existing prescription. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

Keep the distinction in mind when reviewing old texts. A recently forwarded message or saved screenshot says little about the underlying prescription's current status. The pharmacist can check the record instead of relying on when the message appeared in your inbox.

Can a doctor extend an expired eScript?

An expired prescription generally raises a new prescribing decision rather than a simple text-message repair. The clinician needs to decide whether ongoing treatment is appropriate and whether current information, monitoring or examination is required. Prior use does not make renewal automatic. Medical Board telehealth guidelines

Contact your usual prescriber where possible, especially when they manage the ongoing condition. If using another service, have the treatment history and relevant records available. Read renewing an expired prescription for preparation and the limits of online assessment.

What if I am nearly out of medicine?

Tell a pharmacist how much you have left and ask about the appropriate local pathway. They can assess whether any lawful supply option is available or whether you need timely contact with a clinician. Availability depends on the specific circumstances; do not assume an emergency supply will always be possible.

Do not independently change the dose or stretch treatment to compensate for an administrative delay. If you feel unwell or your symptoms change, seek clinical advice rather than focusing only on the prescription date.

Can I avoid the problem next time?

Ask at dispensing how many repeats remain and when you should arrange review. Keep upcoming monitoring or follow-up appointments in mind. A reminder to book review before supply runs low is more useful than relying on the presence of a token in your phone.

If you have multiple prescriptions, label or organise the messages carefully without sharing sensitive information broadly. An Active Script List may help some patients manage electronic prescriptions; a participating pharmacy can explain whether it suits you. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

For a lost current token, see eScript recovery. For a new assessment, see Doccio prescriptions. The doctor decides whether prescribing is appropriate, while the pharmacist checks whether the actual prescription can lawfully be dispensed.
