Short answer

A medical appointment does not automatically qualify for paid sick leave. Fair Work says paid sick leave is for employees who cannot work because of personal illness or injury. Whether an appointment meets that test depends on the circumstances; workplace agreements or policies may provide additional options for attending appointments. Attendance and inability to work are different

An attendance certificate can show that you were at a clinic. A medical certificate about incapacity expresses a clinical opinion about being unable to work. One document does not necessarily establish the other. Ask your employer which question it needs answered before requesting paperwork.

For example, the practical reason you were absent may involve assessment or treatment of an illness affecting your ability to work. Alternatively, it may be a routine appointment while you are otherwise well. Explain the situation honestly rather than assuming every visit must be described as a sick day. Check your workplace arrangements

Your award, registered agreement, contract or workplace policy may include appointment leave, flexible hours or other arrangements. These can be relevant even if the appointment does not meet the basic paid sick-leave test. Ask payroll which provision applies and whether only the necessary time away should be recorded.

If the appointment is planned, discuss timing and notice early. If you become ill unexpectedly, tell the employer as soon as possible. Fair Work requires notice of sick or carer's leave as soon as practicable, including its expected duration. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence

What should I tell the doctor?

Describe your symptoms, treatment needs and work duties. Explain whether you missed a whole shift or part of one. Mention any instructions from the employer about evidence, but do not ask the doctor to write that you were unfit for work if that is not supported by the assessment.

The clinician decides what they can accurately certify. An attendance document may be appropriate in some circumstances, while an incapacity certificate may be supported in others. Ask about documentation during the appointment so that the clinician understands its purpose and can explain any limits. Avant: Medical certificates — your responsibilities

What about taking someone else to an appointment?

Carer's leave depends on providing care or support to an immediate family or household member because of illness, injury or an unexpected emergency. Accompanying someone to an appointment may involve that kind of care, but the appointment alone does not determine entitlement. Fair Work sick and carer’s leave guidance

Explain why your presence is needed and the relationship involved. A routine check-up, support during illness and transport that is convenient but not required can raise different issues. Read who carer's leave can cover and check the employer's evidence requirements rather than treating every accompanying visit identically.

Does telehealth change the leave test?

A consultation by phone or video is a healthcare appointment, but the appointment format does not itself establish inability to work. You may be able to arrange a short private break, or you may be unwell enough to need leave independently of the call. The relevant circumstances still matter. Allow a private space and enough time to speak properly. Trying to complete an assessment while driving or carrying out work duties can limit the conversation. If the doctor needs an in-person examination, ask what follow-up is required and then discuss the resulting absence arrangements with work.

What if the appointment produces an unexpected outcome?

Your situation may change during assessment. Further testing, treatment or advice to avoid particular tasks may affect the rest of the day. Update your employer with the expected absence and ask the clinician whether additional documentation is appropriate.

Avoid promising a return time before you know the plan. You can explain that you are awaiting clinical advice without sharing your full medical history. Keep any certificate in its original form and ask the clinic to correct genuine administrative errors.

For an assessment, use the online doctor service. For paperwork questions, start with the medical certificate guide. Neither booking a consultation nor attending one guarantees that a sick-leave certificate will be issued.
