Short answer

You can generally take a current electronic prescription token to a different pharmacy that supports electronic prescribing. Use the latest repeat token, not an earlier token already dispensed. The pharmacist still checks validity, remaining repeats and dispensing requirements, so changing pharmacies does not bypass restrictions or create extra supply. The token is designed to support pharmacy choice

Electronic prescribing lets you present a token to a participating pharmacy instead of carrying a paper prescription. You are not ordinarily required to use the same pharmacy simply because it supplied the previous repeat. Ask your preferred pharmacy whether it can process your current token. If you use a pharmacy application or an Active Script List, access may be arranged differently. Ask how to use your prescription at another pharmacy without assuming that uninstalling an app or forwarding an old notification transfers every relevant record.

Find the latest token first

After dispensing, a prescription with remaining repeats generally produces a new token for the next supply. The old token may still be stored in your messages, but it is not necessarily the token you should present next. Check the most recent dispensing message. If you cannot find it, contact the pharmacy that last dispensed the medicine. It can help with a missing repeat token. Read lost eScript tokens rather than requesting a new prescription before the status of the existing one is understood.

Tell the new pharmacy what it needs to know

Bring accurate details about the medicine and how it has been supplied previously. Explain relevant allergies, difficulties or advice from your prescriber. A new pharmacy may need information that your usual pharmacist already knows.

The pharmacist must assess the prescription and supply according to applicable requirements. A visible token does not guarantee immediate dispensing, available stock or that the requested timing is appropriate. If they need clarification, ask what information is missing and who should provide it. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance Australian Digital Health Agency prescribing guidance

Check stock before making the trip

Call the pharmacy with the relevant details and ask whether it can help. A pharmacy may be able to process the eScript but not have the required product immediately available. A local stock issue is different from an invalid prescription. Therapeutic Goods Administration: Medicine shortages

If stock is unavailable, discuss options with the pharmacist. Do not assume another strength, formulation or product is interchangeable. Some changes require the prescriber's involvement. See what to do when a pharmacy is out of stock for a practical sequence.

What if my prescription is in an Active Script List?

An Active Script List is an optional way to manage electronic prescriptions without presenting individual tokens each time. The Australian Digital Health Agency explains that participating healthcare providers can access relevant prescriptions with the patient's permission. Ask the new pharmacy whether it supports this and what consent or identity checks are needed. Do not assume every pharmacy application is the same as an Active Script List. If you are uncertain, describe the system you currently use and let the pharmacist explain the options.

Are there situations where I should check first?

Yes. Additional dispensing arrangements or legal requirements can apply to particular prescriptions and circumstances. If your prescriber or pharmacist has given specific instructions about supply, discuss them before changing pharmacies. General pharmacy choice does not override those requirements. Also check whether the prescription is still valid and whether repeats remain. A new pharmacy cannot restore an expired authority or add repeats that were never prescribed. Those issues may need review by the prescriber.

Doccio's prescription service uses an eScript when prescribing is appropriate. Medicine supply and price are handled separately by the pharmacy. Keep your latest token, use a pharmacy that supports electronic prescribing and ask for clarification whenever the status or instructions are unclear.
