Are online medical certificates valid in Australia?
Understand online medical certificates, workplace evidence, short absences, retrospective requests and what to do if a certificate is queried.

An online medical certificate can support an absence in Australia, but acceptance depends on the purpose, supporting assessment and applicable requirements. For workplace sick or carer’s leave, the evidence must reasonably establish your entitlement. A certificate does not automatically guarantee paid leave or approval of a university application. The useful distinction is between the assessment, the document and the leave decision. A doctor assesses the clinical request. The certificate records the supported opinion. Your employer or institution applies the rules relevant to your absence. Understanding those separate steps can prevent confusion when you need evidence quickly.
What Fair Work actually requires
An employee taking sick or carer’s leave must notify their employer as soon as possible and indicate the expected duration. Notification can occur after the leave has begun where that is the earliest practical opportunity. Providing a certificate later does not remove the need to give notice. Keep a record of when and how you informed your employer. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence
An employer may request evidence for one day or less. An award or registered agreement may set out when evidence is needed and the type required, but the request must be reasonable in the circumstances. If requested evidence is not provided, paid leave may be affected. Check the relevant policy before assuming a short absence needs no supporting document. What makes the assessment important?
A document generated online is only useful if it accurately reflects an appropriate assessment. Tell the doctor what symptoms or caring responsibilities affected you, when they began and how they relate to your work or study. The Medical Board’s telehealth guidance applies to doctors using remote consultations, including the need to recognise when remote care is unsuitable. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
A polished PDF, digital signature or verification link is not a replacement for that clinical process. Equally, the fact that the consultation happened by phone or video does not by itself establish a problem with the document. Ask about the assessment pathway and identify who is responsible for the certificate if anything needs clarification.
What should I check before submitting a certificate?
Check that your name is correct, that the relevant dates are clear and that the document relates to the reason for your request. Read the receiving organisation’s instructions: it may have a secure upload portal, a deadline or a specific supporting form. Keep the original document in case you need to resubmit it.
If you find an error, contact the issuing clinic. Do not change the date, wording or signature yourself. Explain the correction you believe is needed and provide supporting information. The doctor may need to review the request rather than simply amend it administratively. A request to correct a typo is different from asking for a longer absence to be certified.
Are university and school requirements the same?
Do not apply employment leave guidance automatically to education. Your institution’s policy is the starting point for absence, assessment extensions and special consideration. Read it before booking, including any requirement to explain how illness affected an assessment rather than simply confirming that you were unwell.
Bring the actual form or written requirements to the doctor. Note submission dates and contact the institution promptly if you cannot obtain evidence within its timeframe. A clinician can assess and document what is clinically supported; the institution decides the application under its own rules. Doccio cannot guarantee an extension, a deferred exam or an accepted application.
What if a certificate is rejected?
Ask for the reason in writing. Is the concern about authenticity, missing information, the dates, the kind of evidence required or your entitlement to leave? This helps identify the next step. A clinic may help with an administrative error, while an employment adviser may be needed for a disagreement about workplace rules.
If the employer requires evidence of something the original assessment did not address, provide the exact request to the clinician. Do not ask the clinician to certify facts they cannot support. Fair Work can provide general guidance about workplace obligations; your union or adviser may help you understand the rules for your situation. Fair Work guidance on notice and medical evidence
