3-day-or-more

Medical certificates for three days or more

Requests for medical certificates covering three days or more require a Doccio doctor consultation. The appointment is an opportunity to assess your symptoms, the impact on daily activities and whether further care is needed, rather than simply purchasing additional days. Your doctor decides what period can be supported and whether online assessment is sufficient. A longer certificate is not guaranteed by booking a longer-request pathway.

Consultation: $59 during business hours or $79 after hours.

What an issued certificate includes

  • Your name and the period supported by assessment.
  • Relevant wording about the affected activities or capacity.
  • The doctor's details and accurate issue and assessment dates.
  • A Doccio reference for checking the issued document.

A request for an extended period may involve questions that cannot be settled in one remote appointment. The doctor will explain any limits.

Who this pathway is for

  • You need an absence of three or more days assessed.
  • Symptoms are continuing beyond an earlier short certificate.
  • You need treatment advice alongside medical documentation.
  • The circumstances or requested form require a more detailed discussion.
  • Your regular clinician is unavailable and you need advice about the appropriate next step.

Bring previous certificates and relevant treatment information so the doctor can understand what has already happened.

A longer absence needs more than a longer document

Review the illness, not only the dates

Tell the doctor whether symptoms are improving, recurring or becoming more difficult to manage. Explain what treatment you have already tried and whether another clinician is involved. Your existing records can help avoid repeating work or overlooking a previous recommendation.

Plan continuing care

Discuss who will review the condition and when. A certificate's end date is not a substitute for a clinical follow-up plan. The RACGP's certification guidance considers assessment of capacity and appropriate documentation rather than automatic fixed periods.

Check your employment position separately

An extended illness can raise questions about leave balances, workplace arrangements and employment protections. These cannot be decided solely from a certificate. Fair Work's longer-absence guidance explains relevant considerations and where to seek advice.

Identify specialised paperwork early

A workers' compensation certificate, insurer report or role-specific clearance can need different expertise and information. Bring the actual document before assuming the standard consultation will cover it. Additional services or an in-person clinician may be needed.

Online care is one route into assessment, not a requirement to keep everything online. When an examination is necessary, the doctor may recommend a local service. Healthdirect describes virtual-care limitations.

Ask about the follow-up plan before the consultation ends.

What the consultation fee means

The $59 or $79 fee is for the consultation. It does not purchase an unlimited number of certified days, a guaranteed form completion or ongoing follow-up appointments. Ask about scope and any separate costs before proceeding. See pricing.
