Workers compensation is a system of insurance and statutory benefits for eligible work-related injuries or illnesses. It may cover treatment, lost earnings and other benefits under the relevant scheme. Australia has multiple schemes with different rules, so eligibility, forms and deadlines must be checked for the jurisdiction and employment involved.
Is it the same as sick leave?
No. Sick leave is an employment leave entitlement, while workers compensation is a separate claim process. How leave interacts with compensation can depend on the scheme and workplace rules. Do not assume an ordinary medical certificate starts a claim or establishes that an injury is work-related for legal purposes.
Notify the employer through the required process and check the relevant authority's instructions. Keep dates, incident details and correspondence. A doctor can record your account and clinical findings, but may not be able to determine every legal question about causation or liability.

What medical information is needed?
Schemes may require a specific certificate of capacity or other report. The clinician often needs to describe function, restrictions, treatment and expected review rather than simply the diagnosis. Accurate information about job tasks is important.
Bring the actual form and any claim reference to the appointment. Ask whether the clinician provides this type of assessment and whether an in-person examination is required. A short telehealth sick-note service may not be suitable for an injury requiring detailed examination or ongoing rehabilitation planning.
Who decides the claim?
The insurer or scheme decision-maker applies the relevant rules. Medical evidence supports that process but does not guarantee approval. Safe Work Australia develops national policy and information; it does not administer individual claims.
Doccio's medical certificate service should not be assumed to include workers compensation certification. Confirm scope before booking. For major injury or severe symptoms, seek urgent medical care first, then address reporting and claim paperwork through the appropriate pathway.
Where to go next
Read medical certificates to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
