Urgent care is healthcare for a problem that needs timely attention but may not require an emergency department. The term covers different services and is not a guarantee of a particular opening time, fee or capability. The right setting depends on symptoms, severity and whether examination, imaging or treatment is needed.
How is urgent care different from emergency care?
An emergency may threaten life or function and needs immediate assessment. Severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, major injury or collapse should not be diverted into a routine urgent-care or online queue. Call 000 when emergency assistance is needed.
A less severe injury or illness may be suitable for a GP, a dedicated urgent care clinic or another local service. If unsure, seek real-time clinical advice. The label urgent does not tell you whether a particular clinic can perform the examination or procedure you need.

What is a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic?
It is a specific Australian service model providing eligible urgent, non-life-threatening care, generally on a walk-in basis without a referral. That is different from assuming every business using the words urgent care is a Medicare clinic.
Check the official listing, opening hours and service scope before attending where practical. Ask about age limits, available facilities and billing if the service is not clearly identified. Availability and waiting times can change.
Can telehealth provide urgent care?
A remote clinician may help assess symptoms and direct you to the appropriate setting. They cannot provide hands-on examination, wound treatment or emergency monitoring. If directed to attend in person, do not wait for another online opinion simply to avoid the visit.
Doccio's online doctor service may suit some timely routine concerns, depending on assessment and availability. It does not replace emergency services. The separate urgent care clinic glossary entry explains how to check the specific clinic model.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
