Stress leave is a common workplace phrase rather than a separate universal leave category. When a mental health condition or stress-related illness makes an employee unable to work, personal sick leave may be relevant, subject to eligibility and evidence requirements. A clinician assesses health and function rather than automatically approving a requested period away.

Does stress count as being unwell?

Mental health can affect capacity to work just as physical health can. The useful clinical discussion concerns symptoms, safety and function: sleep, concentration, mood, panic, exhaustion and ability to perform duties. You do not need to minimise those effects because there is no visible injury.

At the same time, feeling under pressure does not automatically establish a particular diagnosis or a legal entitlement. A doctor considers the circumstances and may discuss treatment, support and follow-up as well as documentation.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Fair Work Ombudsman: Paid sick and carer's leave - Fair Work Ombudsman.

What should I tell the doctor and employer?

Explain what has changed, how work is affected and whether you feel safe. Tell the employer about the absence and expected duration through the appropriate process. Ask what evidence is required without assuming you must disclose every clinical detail to a manager.

If the situation involves bullying, a workplace injury claim or a request for adjustments, separate processes may apply. A standard sick note is not automatically a workers compensation certificate or an occupational assessment.

What happens after time away?

A plan may include ongoing care, a review before returning or discussion of workplace adjustments. Leave alone may not address the factors contributing to illness. Your regular GP may be best placed to coordinate continuing support.

See Doccio's medical certificate service for appropriate assessments. A doctor decides whether evidence can be issued. If you cannot keep yourself safe or there is immediate danger, call 000; Lifeline on 13 11 14 provides crisis support. Do not wait for paperwork before seeking urgent help.

Where to go next

Read medical certificates to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
