Sleep hygiene is the set of routines and environmental habits that support sleep, such as regular timing, a comfortable bedroom and managing evening stimulation. It can be useful, but it is not a complete treatment for every sleep problem. Persistent insomnia, breathing pauses or significant daytime sleepiness may need a separate assessment.

Which habits are worth reviewing?

Consider the regularity of waking and sleeping times, light exposure, screen use, caffeine, alcohol and the bedroom environment. Shift work, caring responsibilities and housing conditions can make standard advice difficult, so a plan should fit real circumstances.

A short sleep diary can record patterns without requiring exact minute-by-minute measurements. Notice how you feel during the day as well as how long you think you slept. Repeated clock-watching and trying to force sleep can make the night more stressful.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Sleep - stages, tips, disorders, apnoea - Healthdirect Australia.

What if I already follow the advice?

Persistent difficulty does not mean you have failed at sleep hygiene. Insomnia can need a structured psychological approach, and other conditions may interfere with sleep. Tell a clinician about snoring, gasping, restless legs, pain, mood changes and current medicines.

Ask what the next assessment step is rather than continually buying new products. A medicine or supplement marketed for sleep is not automatically safe or appropriate, particularly with other treatment. A doctor decides whether further investigation or specific therapy is needed.

When should I seek help?

Arrange review when poor sleep affects mood, work, concentration or safety. Do not drive when dangerously sleepy. Very little sleep with unusual agitation, elevated mood or risky behaviour needs prompt assessment. Call 000 if there is immediate danger or you cannot stay safe.

See Doccio's online doctor service and the insomnia entry. Telehealth can support a sleep history and follow-up, but it cannot replace a sleep study or every physical assessment when another sleep disorder is suspected.

Where to go next

Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
