Sleep apnoea involves repeated pauses or reductions in breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnoea happens when the upper airway becomes partly or fully blocked. Loud snoring, witnessed pauses, gasping and daytime sleepiness can be clues. Diagnosis usually requires a structured assessment and often a sleep study.

Does snoring mean I have sleep apnoea?

Not necessarily. Snoring is common, but pauses in breathing, choking awakenings or marked daytime sleepiness deserve assessment. Some people are unaware of the night-time pattern until a partner notices it. A wearable or phone recording may provide clues but does not replace a diagnostic study.

Tell the doctor about morning headaches, unrefreshing sleep, concentration, blood pressure and any near-miss events while driving. Mention alcohol, shift work and current medicines. If someone has observed your breathing, their description can be useful with your consent.

What does a sleep study involve?

A clinician decides whether testing at home or in a laboratory is appropriate. The study records breathing and other signals during sleep. Ask what equipment is required, who will interpret the result and whether there will be additional costs or follow-up appointments.

Management depends on the type and severity of the condition and individual circumstances. A doctor may discuss devices, lifestyle factors or specialist options. Buying a device online without an assessment may fail to address the problem. If treatment is started, follow-up matters to check comfort, use and whether symptoms are improving.

What should I do about daytime sleepiness?

Do not drive or perform hazardous tasks when dangerously sleepy. Arrange prompt advice if sleepiness is affecting safety or work. Telehealth can begin a sleep history and review results, but it cannot establish the diagnosis from snoring alone. Ask how to manage risk while waiting for testing.
