A skin cancer check is an assessment of skin lesions and risk factors by a suitably trained clinician. It may involve examining the skin with a specialised magnifying instrument and deciding whether a lesion needs monitoring, biopsy or referral. A photograph or phone app cannot reliably replace a full clinical skin assessment.
What changes should I mention?
Tell the clinician about a new spot, a changing lesion, bleeding, persistent crusting or a sore that does not heal. Describe when it appeared and how it has changed. A lesion does not need to be painful to warrant attention.
Mention previous skin cancers, family history, immune suppression and significant sun exposure. Bring earlier photographs or reports if available. Avoid covering the area with makeup immediately before an examination unless the service advises otherwise.

Can a video consultation clear a mole?
A remote image may help determine the next step, but it has important limits. Lighting, focus and the lack of close examination can obscure features. A clinician may appropriately recommend in-person assessment even when a photograph looks reassuring.
Do not use an app result or comparison with online pictures to rule out cancer. If a lesion is changing, arrange review rather than waiting for a routine annual date. A normal assessment in the past does not establish that a later change is harmless.
What happens if something looks suspicious?
The clinician may recommend a biopsy, removal or specialist review depending on the findings. Ask what is being considered, how results will be communicated and who is responsible for follow-up. A skin check itself does not always provide a final diagnosis.
Doccio's online doctor service can be checked for advice about the appropriate care pathway. This entry does not claim that a complete skin cancer examination can be performed remotely. Seek timely in-person review for a concerning lesion and continue sun protection regardless of the result.
