Sick-leave evidence is information showing that an employee was unable to work because of illness or injury, or met the relevant caring circumstances. Fair Work recognises medical certificates and statutory declarations as examples. The evidence must satisfy a reasonable person, and the employer's request and applicable workplace rules matter.
Can evidence be requested for one day?
Yes. An employer can ask for evidence for a short absence, including one day or less. Employees also need to provide notice as soon as practicable and explain the expected duration. Check any award, agreement and workplace process that applies.
Ask exactly what document is needed and where it should be sent. Do not assume a particular branded certificate is the only acceptable form or that every employer uses the same process. A request should be considered against the relevant legal requirements.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Fair Work Ombudsman: Notice and medical certificates - Fair Work Ombudsman.
What can a doctor certify?
A doctor can provide a professional opinion supported by assessment and available information. Explain the actual symptoms, dates and effect on work. The clinician decides whether a certificate is appropriate and what wording can be justified.
If you are seeking evidence after the absence, be accurate about when symptoms occurred and when you were assessed. A doctor should not falsely date a document or pretend an earlier examination happened. Evidence about a past period depends on what can reasonably be supported.
Does evidence guarantee payment?
No. Payment also depends on eligibility, available leave and applicable rules. Authenticity checking is separate from the entitlement decision. Doccio's supplied process includes a verification ID, with checking through its certificate verification page.
Read Doccio's medical certificate information before booking. Unusual employer, insurer or government forms may require a different assessment. For a dispute over evidence or pay, keep the correspondence and seek Fair Work or other appropriate workplace advice; repeated clinical appointments may not resolve the underlying employment question.
Where to go next
Read medical certificates to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
