Registered doctor
Registered doctor explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.

A registered doctor is a medical practitioner whose registration permits practice under the applicable Australian registration framework and conditions. Ahpra's public register shows current registration information. Registration category, conditions and specialist status are details to check, rather than assuming every use of the word doctor describes the same credentials. Check the individual providing care
Ask for the clinician's name if it is not clear. Search the official register using the available identifying information and confirm that the result matches the person. A website-wide badge does not replace identifying the doctor responsible for your consultation.
If a name produces several results, compare the published details carefully. If you still cannot resolve the identity, ask the clinic or Ahpra. Avoid sharing another practitioner's registration number as though it belongs to the person you saw.
Registration does not guarantee a requested outcome
A doctor must assess whether care is appropriate. They may decide that a remote consultation is insufficient or that a requested prescription or certificate is not supported. Professional accountability includes making those decisions, even when the patient hoped for a different result. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
You can ask for the reason and what information or next step is needed. A clear explanation should distinguish a clinical limitation from an administrative issue such as a missing form or incorrect contact number.
Keep a record of the consultation
Retain the clinician's details and the care plan for future appointments. If another service becomes involved, explain who assessed you and what was recommended. That helps continuity and makes follow-up questions easier to direct.
Doccio's online doctor information describes access to Australian-registered doctors. Check the current service scope and availability before booking. If your concern is urgent, seek the appropriate level of care rather than spending time resolving a routine registration question while symptoms worsen. Registration checking supports informed choice; it does not replace triage or clinical assessment.
