A public hospital is owned or run by government and provides hospital services under public funding arrangements. Eligible people treated as public patients generally receive covered hospital care without a charge for that treatment. Choosing private-patient status, using private services or needing ambulance transport can involve different costs and rules.
Can I choose my doctor as a public patient?
The hospital generally allocates the treating team according to clinical needs and service arrangements. Care may involve several clinicians working together. Ask who is coordinating the plan and who to contact after discharge if there is uncertainty.
For planned specialist or surgical care, referral and waiting-list processes apply. Urgency is assessed clinically, and a referral does not guarantee an immediate appointment. Tell the referring clinician if symptoms worsen while waiting.

Is everything connected with hospital care free?
Not necessarily. Eligibility, patient status and the particular service matter. Ambulance transport is not generally covered by Medicare, and medicines or follow-up outside hospital can have separate arrangements. Ask the hospital about any expected charges for planned care.
If you are asked to elect private-patient status, make sure the financial implications are explained. Do not assume having insurance means you must use it. For visitors or people without Medicare eligibility, different rules may apply.
What should I do after discharge?
Read the discharge plan, confirm follow-up appointments and ask who will review outstanding results. Keep a current medicines list and share relevant documents with your regular clinician. If instructions conflict or are unclear, contact the treating service rather than guessing.
Doccio's online doctor service can be checked for suitable follow-up discussions, but serious deterioration requires urgent care. Call 000 for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, collapse or other life-threatening symptoms. A routine telehealth appointment should not replace a hospital return when the discharge instructions or current symptoms indicate urgent reassessment.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
