A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialist training in mental health who assesses conditions and recommends treatment suited to the individual. Their work may include psychological therapies, medication or advice to another treating clinician. Some provide adult ADHD assessment and ongoing care, while others offer different services or assessment only.

Treatment may include psychological therapies, medication or other forms of care. A psychiatrist may provide ongoing treatment or offer an assessment and recommendations for another treating clinician.

How is a psychiatrist different from a psychologist?

Psychiatrists have medical training and can prescribe medicines within the relevant requirements. Psychologists are trained in psychological assessment and treatment, but do not prescribe medicines in Australia.

Both professions can have a role in ADHD care. Appropriately trained psychologists and psychiatrists may assess ADHD, while medical treatment requires an appropriately authorised medical prescriber. Their roles can complement each other.

What is an ADHD psychiatrist?

The phrase usually means a psychiatrist whose work includes ADHD assessment and management. Not every psychiatrist offers adult ADHD assessment, and practices differ in the age groups and conditions they see.

Before booking, ask whether the clinician provides the service you need: diagnostic assessment, treatment advice, ongoing care or a second opinion. Check whether a report and feedback are included and whether new referrals are being accepted.

Do I need a referral?

A valid medical referral is generally required to claim Medicare benefits for eligible private psychiatrist appointments. Many clinics also require one before booking. The psychiatrist sets their own fees, so ask about the full charge, expected rebate and gap. What happens at the first appointment?

The psychiatrist discusses your concerns, health history, previous treatments and current circumstances. They may need further information or appointments before reaching a diagnosis or recommending treatment. RANZCP Your Health in Mind: Your first appointment

You can bring notes, questions and relevant reports. Ask how follow-up will work and how recommendations will be communicated to your usual doctor.

Doccio offers psychiatrist referral consultations. This is a consultation about referral needs with a Doccio doctor, not a psychiatrist appointment or a guarantee of specialist treatment.

Doccio's psychiatry partner is SetMind, an Australian online psychiatry practice for adults offering ADHD assessments and shared-care plans by telehealth. Your doctor can address a referral to SetMind or to any clinic you prefer; SetMind confirms its fees and any Medicare rebate in writing before you book.
