Private billing
Private billing explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
Private billing means a healthcare provider charges a fee directly for a service. Depending on the service and eligibility, a Medicare benefit may or may not be available. The term should not be used as shorthand for a guaranteed rebate, a particular out-of-pocket amount or a prescription price. Services Australia: Medical costs
Ask for the whole appointment cost
Before booking, check the fee for the selected service and time. Ask whether it covers only the assessment or includes any follow-up. Clarify cancellation, rescheduling and refund terms where relevant. Do not assume an advertised starting price covers a different appointment type.
If a Medicare claim is mentioned, ask whether your circumstances meet the requirements and how the claim is processed. A clinic requesting a Medicare number is not enough to establish eligibility. Services Australia telehealth eligibility guidance
Separate assessment from downstream care
A prescription, test request or referral may lead to costs charged by another provider. Pharmacy supply, pathology, imaging and specialist appointments can each have their own arrangements. Ask those services for a quote or explanation before proceeding where practical.
Paying privately does not require a doctor to provide a requested outcome. The fee is for the service described, with clinical decisions made according to the assessment. If a request is unsuitable, ask what the next step is and how the service terms apply. Medical Board telehealth guidelines
Doccio's pay-per-consult model
Doccio lists $19 for a one-day certificate assessment, $29 for a two-day certificate or repeat prescription assessment, and doctor consultations at $59 in business hours or $79 after hours. Check current pricing and selected service conditions. Doccio’s published service pricing
Business hours are 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday, Sydney time. A doctor decides whether a certificate, prescription or other outcome is supported. Keep the booking confirmation and receipt so any billing question can be linked to the correct service, rather than assuming the price of one Doccio pathway applies to every kind of assessment.
