A practice nurse is a nurse working in a general practice or similar primary-care setting. Depending on qualifications, competence and the service, their work may include health assessments, wound care, immunisation, education and support for chronic conditions. Their role is different from that of a GP and from an endorsed nurse practitioner.
What can a practice nurse help with?
The exact service depends on the practice and the nurse's scope. A nurse may collect information, perform clinical tasks, support a care plan or coordinate follow-up. Some appointments involve both a nurse and a doctor, while others are booked specifically with the nurse.
Ask the practice what appointment type fits your need. A request for a wound review, vaccination or chronic-condition check may require equipment, a particular booking length or an in-person visit. Do not assume every task can be completed by telehealth.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association: General practice nursing.
Can a practice nurse prescribe or issue any document?
Professional titles and endorsements matter. A practice nurse is not automatically an endorsed nurse practitioner, and prescribing authority is not established simply by working in a clinic. Ask who is responsible for the assessment and any prescription, referral or certificate you need.
The practice should explain what the nurse can provide and when a doctor or another clinician is required. If your symptoms change during an appointment, the nurse may recommend escalation rather than continuing a routine task.
How can I prepare?
Bring relevant records, a current medicines list and the reason for the visit. Ask whether there are preparation instructions, costs or a separate doctor appointment. At the end, confirm who will follow up results and when the next review is due.
Doccio's online doctor service describes its current offering. This glossary entry explains the general role of practice nurses and does not claim that Doccio provides nurse appointments, immunisations or hands-on procedures. Emergency symptoms require appropriate urgent care regardless of the booked clinician.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
