A patient portal is a secure online area offered by a healthcare service for tasks such as viewing appointments, completing forms or accessing selected documents. Features differ between providers. A portal is not automatically the same as My Health Record, and messages sent through it may not be monitored continuously.

What might I be able to do there?

Some portals allow booking changes, pre-appointment forms, document downloads or communication with the clinic. Others provide only a limited set of functions. Check the particular service rather than assuming every portal includes results, prescriptions or the complete clinical record.

For example, NSW Health's Florence portal supports selected appointment and communication tasks at participating clinics. That example illustrates what a portal can do; it does not establish which functions Doccio offers.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see NSW Health: Florence | Sydney Local Health District - NSW Government.

How should I protect access?

Use the official website or app and a strong, unique password. Keep login codes private and avoid sharing your account with another person. If someone helps manage your care, ask about authorised access rather than giving them your credentials.

Keep contact details current so appointment and security messages reach you. If a message asks you to log in unexpectedly, navigate through the service's known website instead of relying on an unfamiliar link. Report suspected unauthorised access promptly through the provider's official contact channel.

Can I use it for urgent symptoms?

Do not assume a portal message will receive an immediate response. Read the stated response times and contact arrangements. Call 000 for emergencies and use an appropriate urgent-care pathway when symptoms cannot wait.

Ask who reviews uploaded information, how results are communicated and what to do if a document appears incorrect. See Doccio's privacy information and online doctor process for current arrangements. Access to a portal does not itself confirm that a doctor has reviewed every item you upload.

Where to go next

Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
