A pathology request asks a laboratory service to perform tests on a sample, such as blood or urine, to help investigate or monitor health. It is a clinical request, not the result itself. A doctor decides which tests, if any, are appropriate for the question being assessed. Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing: About pathology

A useful test answers a useful question

Tell the clinician what symptoms or concern prompted the request and provide previous results where available. More tests do not automatically produce a clearer answer. The choice depends on the history, findings and how the result could influence care.

If another clinician already requested testing, explain that before obtaining a second request. Duplicate or differently timed tests can create confusion. Ask whether the existing request addresses the same question and who is responsible for reviewing it.

Prepare with the collection service

Check where the sample can be collected, whether an appointment is needed and whether preparation is required. Do not fast or stop medicines unless the relevant professional tells you to. Instructions depend on the particular test. Healthdirect Australia: Guide to blood testing

Ask about fees and Medicare eligibility directly. A request form is not a guarantee that every test will be bulk billed. Bring the form and any identification or details the collection service requires.

Plan how results will be reviewed

Before the consultation ends, establish who will interpret the results and how you will hear about them. Ask what to do if no message arrives. A result appearing in a portal does not necessarily mean a clinician has explained its significance.

Doccio's online doctor service can assess whether a pathology request fits your circumstances. The doctor may recommend examination or another pathway first. If you become more unwell while waiting for collection or results, seek further advice rather than treating a pending test as a reason to delay care. The result supports an assessment; it does not replace the clinical picture.
