Paper prescription
Paper prescription explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.

A paper prescription is a prescription issued in a physical paper format. It differs from an electronic prescription accessed through a token. A printed electronic token is still an access key for an eScript; printing it does not turn it into a conventional paper prescription. Why the format distinction matters
A photograph or scan of a paper document is not automatically equivalent to an original prescription for dispensing purposes. Ask the pharmacy what it needs before sending images or travelling. Requirements depend on the prescription and applicable rules, so avoid relying on a general social media answer.
If a service asks you to post or deliver an original document, clarify the process and timing. Do not assume that uploading a picture has completed every requirement. Keep the original safe and do not edit its details.
Changing formats is not a do-it-yourself task
You cannot create a valid electronic prescription by copying a paper document into a QR-code generator. Similarly, a screenshot of a token does not authorise additional supplies beyond the prescription's status. Ask the prescriber or pharmacist about supported options. If the document is lost, explain exactly which format you had and whether it has already been dispensed. This helps the service distinguish a lost paper original from a lost token message. The recovery or replacement process may be different.
What to tell Doccio
When requesting a review through Doccio's prescription service, provide the current treatment history and explain whether a valid prescription or repeat already exists. A new consultation should address the clinical need, not accidentally duplicate an existing supply request.
A doctor decides whether a new prescription is appropriate. The consultation fee does not include pharmacy supply costs. Before the appointment ends, check how any authorised prescription will be delivered and what to do if you cannot access that format. Clear communication about paper, tokens and repeats can prevent an administrative problem from becoming an unnecessary extra consultation.
