On-demand telehealth usually means a service that offers remote consultations without the long lead time of a traditional appointment. It is a service description, not a guarantee of immediate access or a particular clinical outcome. Waiting times, consultation format, eligibility and follow-up arrangements vary between providers.
Does on-demand mean a doctor is available instantly?
Not necessarily. A service may use a queue, scheduled slots or a callback system. Read how the provider defines availability and what happens during busy periods. An advertised service window does not guarantee that a clinician can assess you at the moment you submit a request.
Check whether you will speak with a doctor by phone or video and whether an intake form is part of the process. A form can prepare the consultation, but it should not be mistaken for an automatic clinical approval.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Virtual care clinics - Healthdirect Australia.
What should I compare before booking?
Look at the total fee, clinician details, cancellation arrangements and how follow-up works. Ask what happens if the doctor needs an in-person examination or cannot provide the requested document or treatment. Tests and pharmacy costs may be separate.
Have your relevant history, medicines and contact details ready. Be available through the agreed channel and tell the service if symptoms change while you wait. Do not submit several conflicting versions of your history to different services in an attempt to obtain a particular result.
Is it suitable for urgent symptoms?
Speed of access does not make telehealth an emergency service. Severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, collapse or stroke symptoms require 000 or emergency care. A doctor may appropriately direct you to an examination rather than complete treatment remotely.
See Doccio's online doctor service and today appointments information for its current arrangements. A doctor decides what care is appropriate; on-demand access does not guarantee a prescription, certificate or referral.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
