A nurse triage line is a telephone service where a registered nurse assesses information about symptoms and advises on an appropriate next step. Advice may include self-care, seeing a GP or seeking emergency care. It does not necessarily provide a diagnosis, prescription, referral or booked appointment.
What happens during the call?
The nurse asks about the person affected, symptoms, timing and relevant health conditions. They may use a structured assessment to help identify urgency. Be ready to describe breathing, alertness, pain and other changes rather than only naming a suspected diagnosis.
If calling for someone else, explain your relationship and whether they are with you. Consent and the person's ability to answer questions may affect the assessment. Do not minimise symptoms to avoid an emergency recommendation or exaggerate them to obtain a particular outcome.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: NURSE-ON-CALL: 1300 60 60 24 - Healthdirect Australia.
Is it the same as an online doctor appointment?
No. A triage service's role and scope depend on the provider. For example, Victoria's NURSE-ON-CALL provides nursing advice and guidance on care options. A separate doctor consultation may be needed for diagnosis, prescribing or documentation.
Ask what the recommendation means in practical terms: how soon you should be seen, what service is appropriate and what to monitor meanwhile. If symptoms change after the call, seek further advice rather than assuming the earlier recommendation remains valid indefinitely.
Which number should I use?
Check the official service for your state or territory. Healthdirect provides Australian health advice on 1800 022 222, with local arrangements applying. In a life-threatening emergency, call 000 rather than a routine advice line.
Doccio's online doctor consultations are a separate service. A nurse triage call does not confirm Doccio availability or guarantee that a remote consultation is appropriate. Follow urgent-care advice promptly, especially if examination or hospital assessment has been recommended.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
