Night sweats are episodes of sweating during sleep that soak clothing or bedding despite a room that is not overly warm. Hormonal changes, infections, medicines and other conditions can contribute. Repeated unexplained episodes deserve assessment, particularly when accompanied by fever, weight loss, cough or other persistent symptoms.
How are they different from simply overheating?
A heavy doona, warm room or extra clothing can make anyone sweat. The concern is a recurring pattern that is out of proportion to the environment. Note whether you need to change clothing or bedding and whether symptoms occur alongside daytime sweating or hot flushes.
Tell the doctor about fever, appetite, weight changes, cough, swollen glands and travel. Mention menstrual changes, sleep symptoms and any new treatment. A brief record of episodes can help, but you do not need to measure sweat or recreate the symptoms deliberately.

Does it mean something serious?
There are many possible explanations, and night sweats alone do not identify one. A clinician considers the full history and may examine you or arrange selected tests. It is equally unhelpful to assume a serious diagnosis from an internet search or to dismiss a persistent unexplained pattern.
Ask what the likely possibilities are, which findings need follow-up and when to review if the first tests are normal. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, even if sweating began after starting it. Telehealth can be a useful starting point, but examination and testing may be needed.
When should I seek prompt care?
Night sweats with persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, a continuing cough, a new lump or significant illness should be reviewed promptly. Chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, confusion or collapse requires urgent care. Call 000 for life-threatening symptoms. If the sweating is mainly linked to hot flushes, a clinician can assess that pattern while still checking for other concerning features.
