Migraine aura describes temporary neurological symptoms that can occur around a migraine attack. Visual changes are a familiar example, but speech or sensation can also be affected. Not every person with migraine has aura, and not every episode of visual disturbance is caused by migraine. Healthdirect Australia: Migraine

New neurological symptoms need care

Do not use this definition to diagnose a first episode. Sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, major visual change or other possible stroke symptoms require emergency assessment. Call 000 rather than waiting to see whether a headache follows. Familiarity with the word aura does not make an unfamiliar symptom safe.

If you already have a clinician-confirmed aura pattern, explain what is different about the current episode. Changes in duration, type of symptom or recovery may matter. Your usual history is useful context, not an exemption from reassessment. Healthdirect Australia: Migraine

Describe the sequence clearly

For a planned review, note what happens first, how the symptoms develop and whether headache follows. Describe what you actually see or feel rather than using only “aura”. A written sequence is often easier to interpret than a broad label.

Tell clinicians who prescribe other treatment that you have migraine with aura. Your wider medical history can affect which options are appropriate, including some contraception choices. Do not stop or change prescribed care on the basis of a glossary entry; ask the treating clinician for individual advice. Healthdirect Australia: The pill (combined oral contraceptive pill)

Discuss a complete migraine plan

A review should consider the attack pattern, effects on daily life and what to do if symptoms change. Bring current medicines and any previous specialist advice. Ask whether your existing plan still fits your situation and how follow-up will be arranged.

Doccio's migraine assessment page explains the online pathway. The doctor decides whether remote care is appropriate. An online consultation cannot rule out every urgent neurological cause, so emergency symptoms should be assessed through emergency services rather than a routine booking.
