Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box and vocal cords, commonly causing a hoarse or weak voice. It may follow a respiratory infection or voice strain, but persistent hoarseness has other possible causes. Assessment is important when the voice does not recover, symptoms recur or swallowing or breathing is affected.

Should I keep talking to clear my voice?

Repeatedly forcing the voice or clearing the throat can add irritation. Resting the voice and avoiding smoke may be useful while you seek advice. Whispering is not necessarily a gentler way to speak, so ask a clinician about suitable voice care if your work depends on talking.

Tell the doctor when hoarseness began, whether it followed illness or heavy voice use, and whether there is pain, cough or reflux. Mention smoking, a neck lump, weight loss or coughing up blood. These details may change the need for examination or specialist review.

What does assessment involve?

A doctor reviews the history and examines the throat and neck where appropriate. Ongoing or unexplained symptoms may require a closer view of the voice box by a specialist. A video call can assess the history and voice, but cannot inspect the vocal cords.

Do not assume every hoarse voice needs a prescription. The appropriate management depends on the cause and duration. Ask how long to monitor symptoms, what changes should prompt earlier review and whether work adjustments would help avoid further strain. If you are a singer or professional voice user, explain the demands placed on your voice.

When is it urgent?

Difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling or severe deterioration needs urgent assessment. Call 000 for severe breathing difficulty, blue colour or reduced consciousness. Do not wait for an online appointment when the airway may be affected. Persistent hoarseness without emergency symptoms still warrants a planned medical review.
