Income protection claims
An income protection claim asks an insurer to pay benefits under a policy when illness or injury affects the ability to work.

An income protection claim asks an insurer to pay benefits under a policy when illness or injury affects the ability to work. Cover depends on the policy's definitions, waiting periods, exclusions and evidence requirements. A medical certificate can support a claim, but it does not determine whether the insurer must approve or pay it.
What evidence might the insurer need?
The insurer may request its own form, clinical reports, work information and financial records. The relevant medical questions often concern function, treatment and expected recovery rather than simply naming a diagnosis. Read the request carefully and ask the insurer to clarify anything unclear.
Bring the actual form and policy request to the clinician. Explain your duties and how symptoms affect them. A short consultation for an ordinary sick note may not provide enough information for a detailed insurance report, especially for an ongoing or complex condition.

Who decides whether the claim succeeds?
The doctor gives a professional opinion supported by assessment and records. The insurer applies the policy terms and makes the claims decision. A statement that you are unfit for work does not automatically satisfy every policy's definition of disability or incapacity.
Waiting periods and benefit periods are different. The first affects when benefits may start; the second concerns how long eligible payments may continue. Check the actual policy rather than relying on a general percentage or example from another person's cover.
How can I avoid administrative delays?
Keep copies, deadlines and claim references together. Confirm who will submit the medical report and whether there is a fee. If the insurer asks for more information, identify the specific gap rather than repeatedly obtaining generic certificates.
Doccio's medical certificate service should not be assumed to include insurance reports. Check scope before booking. Your regular treating clinician may be better placed to describe longitudinal care, while policy disputes should be directed to the insurer's review process or an appropriate adviser.
Where to go next
Read medical certificates to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
