Hypertension means persistently raised blood pressure. It often causes no symptoms, so a person may feel well while readings remain high. Diagnosis usually depends on properly taken measurements over time, sometimes including home or ambulatory monitoring. Management considers overall cardiovascular health rather than a single isolated reading.

Can one high reading diagnose it?

A single result can be affected by recent activity, stress, cuff size or measurement technique. It still deserves appropriate follow-up, particularly if very high or accompanied by symptoms. A doctor can explain how and when to repeat measurements and whether a home monitor is suitable.

Bring a record showing the date, time and circumstances of readings. Avoid repeatedly checking every few minutes unless a clinician has asked you to do so. Mention pregnancy, kidney disease, other conditions and all medicines or supplements, because these can change the assessment.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: High blood pressure (hypertension) - Healthdirect Australia.

What does a review include?

The clinician may discuss smoking, activity, sleep, diet, family history and existing health conditions. Blood or urine tests and other checks may be appropriate. Ask what target is suitable for you, how progress will be monitored and when to arrange follow-up.

Treatment decisions are individual. Do not stop established care because you feel well or because one reading improved. If you have dizziness or other unwanted effects, tell the doctor so the plan can be reviewed safely. Telehealth can support ongoing review when reliable readings and relevant results are available.

When do symptoms make it urgent?

Chest pain, severe breathlessness, new weakness, confusion, seizures or sudden major vision changes need emergency assessment. Call 000 for suspected heart attack or stroke symptoms. During pregnancy, new headache, visual disturbance or significant illness needs urgent maternity advice. Do not rely on an online appointment to evaluate severe symptoms alongside a high reading.

Where to go next

Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
