An emergency department is the part of a hospital that assesses and treats serious or urgent illness and injury. Patients are prioritised by clinical urgency through triage, rather than simply by arrival time. Emergencies require direct care; an online consultation should not delay calling 000 or attending an emergency department when needed.
Why might someone arriving later be seen first?
Triage assesses how urgently treatment is needed. A person with a less visible but life-threatening problem may be prioritised ahead of someone who has waited longer. Waiting does not mean your symptoms are unimportant. Tell staff if your condition changes while you are waiting.
Give a clear description of the main problem, onset and any major medical conditions. Bring a medicines list, allergy information and relevant documents if readily available, but do not delay emergency care to gather paperwork.

Should I go there or use another service?
Severe chest pain, serious breathing difficulty, stroke symptoms, major injury, collapse or reduced consciousness are examples of emergencies. Call 000 if emergency transport or immediate assistance is needed. For less severe but urgent problems, a GP, urgent care service or nurse advice line may help identify the right setting.
Do not use a glossary page as a complete triage tool. The same symptom can have different urgency depending on severity and circumstances. If you are unsure and symptoms are concerning, seek real-time clinical advice.
What happens after assessment?
You may have tests, treatment, observation, admission or discharge with a follow-up plan. Ask who will review outstanding results and what signs mean you should return. Public and private hospital billing arrangements differ, so confirm costs where appropriate without delaying emergency care.
Doccio's online consultations are a separate care setting. They may support suitable follow-up, but cannot replace emergency facilities, observation or hands-on treatment.
Where to go next
Read online doctor consultations to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
