Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that commonly causes dry, itchy and easily irritated skin. Symptoms may come and go, and scratching can damage the skin barrier. The appearance varies with skin tone. Management usually combines ongoing skin care with an individual plan for flares and signs of infection.
What does an eczema flare look like?
Skin may become rough, scaly, cracked or inflamed. On darker skin, affected areas may look darker, grey or purple rather than bright red. The location, itch and change from usual skin are important. A rash that looks unfamiliar should not automatically be labelled eczema.
Track possible triggers such as heat, soaps, friction or a new product. Avoid assuming that every flare is caused by a food allergy. Unnecessary food restriction can create other problems, particularly for children, and should be discussed with a qualified clinician.

What belongs in a skin-care plan?
A clinician can explain gentle washing, moisturising and how to manage different body areas. Ask exactly when and how to use any recommended treatment and what to do once the flare settles. Treatment suitable for one area or age group may not suit another.
Bring a list of products used and photographs showing changes over time. Tell the doctor if itching is disrupting sleep or school, or if treatment itself causes burning or irritation. Recurrent symptoms may need a review of the diagnosis, application technique or contributing exposures.
When should I seek prompt review?
Increasing pain, warmth, discharge, crusting or fever can indicate infection. Rapidly spreading painful blisters or a person who feels very unwell needs urgent assessment. A photograph may support an online review, but it cannot replace examination when infection or another skin condition is suspected. A doctor decides which management is appropriate for the current episode.
