An ECG, or electrocardiogram, records the heart's electrical activity through sensors placed on the skin. It can help assess heart rhythm and other cardiac concerns. A standard ECG is a brief recording, so a normal result does not rule out every heart problem or capture every intermittent symptom.

Does an ECG put electricity into the heart?

No. It records electrical signals generated by the heart. A routine resting ECG is generally painless, although removing adhesive electrodes can be uncomfortable. Staff may need access to the chest and limbs and will explain positioning and preparation.

Tell the clinician about symptoms, when they occur and any relevant heart history. If symptoms happen only occasionally, note their duration and triggers. That information helps determine whether a resting ECG or another form of monitoring is appropriate.

For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Healthdirect Australia: Electrocardiogram - ECG or EKG - Healthdirect Australia.

Is a smartwatch recording the same?

No. A wearable may provide useful information, but it does not replace every function of a clinical ECG or a medical assessment. Bring any recording to the clinician without assuming the device's interpretation is definitive.

Similarly, a normal brief ECG does not mean new chest pain can be ignored. Some conditions need repeated recordings, blood tests, longer monitoring or other investigations. The clinician interprets the result in the context of the current symptoms.

What should I ask after the test?

Ask what the result shows, whether any follow-up is required and what to do if symptoms recur. Confirm who will receive the report. If you are having a stress or other specialised test, follow that service's separate preparation and safety instructions.

Doccio's tests information can clarify its current referral process, but an ECG itself requires suitable equipment and clinical arrangements. Call 000 for concerning chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse or palpitations with fainting rather than waiting for a routine online request.

Where to go next

Read tests to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
