Dry eyes occur when tears do not adequately lubricate and protect the eye surface. This can reflect too little tear production or tears evaporating too quickly. Symptoms may include grittiness, burning, fluctuating blur and sometimes watering. Persistent symptoms deserve assessment, especially when contact lenses or other eye conditions are involved.
How can my eyes be dry if they water?
Irritation can trigger watering even when the normal tear film is not working well. The amount of visible fluid alone does not show whether the eye surface is healthy. A clinician may assess tear production, eyelids and the surface of the eyes.
Note whether symptoms worsen with screens, air conditioning, wind or contact lenses. Mention recent eye surgery, other health conditions and current medicines. Describe any difference between the two eyes and whether vision changes clear with blinking or persist.

What can I do for everyday comfort?
Regular breaks from prolonged screen use and reducing direct airflow may help. Avoid rubbing irritated eyes. A pharmacist, optometrist or doctor can discuss suitable eye care; different products have different directions and are not interchangeable for every person.
If you wear contact lenses, ask whether to pause their use and when it is safe to restart. Do not use someone else's eye products. Persistent symptoms or repeated need for self-treatment warrants a review rather than continually trying new products without examining the cause.
When is an eye problem urgent?
Eye pain, significant light sensitivity, sudden or persistent vision changes, flashes of light or a red eye with severe headache needs urgent assessment. An injury also changes the urgency. Telehealth can help discuss symptoms, but cannot replace an eye examination when vision or the eye surface may be at risk. Sudden vision loss should be treated as an emergency.
