Bulk billing
Bulk billing explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.

Bulk billing is when a provider accepts the Medicare benefit as full payment for a bulk-billed service, so the patient does not pay a fee for that service. It is a billing arrangement tied to eligible services and patients. It does not mean every service offered by a clinic is free. Services Australia’s bulk-billing explanation
Confirm the exact appointment
Ask whether the selected consultation is bulk billed and whether any separate services may attract charges. A clinic may have different arrangements for different appointment types or circumstances. An old advertisement or another patient's experience may not describe your booking.
Telehealth eligibility has its own rules. Being able to attend remotely does not automatically establish that the appointment can be bulk billed. Check the provider's current explanation before proceeding. Services Australia telehealth eligibility guidance
Be careful with the word free
A bulk-billed consultation does not necessarily include pharmacy items, tests, imaging or later specialist appointments. Those providers may have separate charges and eligibility requirements. Ask about each part of the proposed care pathway.
If you are asked to pay something alongside a service described as bulk billed, ask the provider to explain exactly what the charge covers. Keep the explanation and receipt. Clear billing information helps you understand the arrangement without assuming every charge is the same type of fee.
Doccio uses a different billing model
Doccio is described as a private pay-per-consult service with no subscription. Its fees are shown on the pricing page. Do not describe a Doccio consultation as bulk billed unless the current service terms explicitly establish that arrangement. Doccio’s published service pricing
The Medicare and telehealth question page explains the distinction. If you need a bulk-billing option because of cost, check another provider's current availability and eligibility directly. The billing model does not determine whether a requested prescription or certificate is appropriate; the clinician still makes a clinical decision based on the assessment.
