Asthma is a long-term condition in which sensitive airways become inflamed and narrow, making breathing more difficult. Symptoms can include wheezing, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness. Their severity can change, so asthma care includes a personalised management plan and clear instructions for recognising a worsening episode.

How is asthma different from an occasional cough?

An isolated cough does not establish asthma. A doctor considers when symptoms occur, whether they vary, and whether exercise, infections or other triggers bring them on. Breathing tests may help confirm the diagnosis. Other lung or heart problems can cause similar symptoms.

Describe night waking, limitations during activity and changes from your usual breathing. Bring your current action plan and details of everything you use to manage symptoms. If you use an inhaler, a clinician may need to check your technique rather than simply renew a previous prescription.

Can asthma be reviewed online?

Telehealth may help with an established management plan, symptom review and deciding whether further care is needed. It cannot replace all breathing tests, oxygen checks or chest examinations. If control is deteriorating, ask whether you need an in-person appointment rather than waiting for a routine online review.

A written asthma action plan should explain your usual treatment and what to do when symptoms worsen. Keep it accessible and follow the individual instructions given by your clinician. Tell the doctor if you are unsure which part of the plan applies. Do not rely on an old plan if your symptoms or treatment have changed.

When is asthma an emergency?

Call 000 for severe breathing difficulty, difficulty speaking, blue lips, marked exhaustion or drowsiness. Follow your existing emergency action plan while help is being arranged. Do not wait for an online booking or message response during a severe attack. Even an episode that settles may need prompt clinical review.
