Annual leave is paid time away from work for eligible employees, often called holiday leave. It is separate from personal or carer's leave used for illness, injury or caring responsibilities. Australian entitlements depend on the employment system, employment type and applicable award or agreement, so a medical certificate does not determine the annual leave balance.
Who generally receives annual leave?
Under the National Employment Standards, full-time and part-time employees accrue paid annual leave, while casual employees do not receive the same paid entitlement. Awards or agreements may provide additional benefits. Check whether the national workplace system applies to your employment and what your contract or award says.
Your payslip or payroll system may show the balance, but ask the employer if the calculation is unclear. A doctor can assess health and provide appropriate evidence; they do not calculate or approve employment leave entitlements.
For the Australian guidance behind this explanation, see Fair Work Ombudsman: Annual leave - Fair Work Ombudsman.
What if I become sick while on holiday?
An eligible employee who is unfit for work due to illness or injury may be able to use accrued paid personal leave instead of annual leave for the relevant period. Notice and evidence requirements still matter. Contact the employer promptly and check the applicable arrangements.
Do not assume a later certificate automatically changes a past payroll decision. Tell the doctor the actual dates and circumstances. A clinician must decide what can be supported from the assessment and available information, rather than issuing a document to fit an administrative preference.
How should I handle the paperwork?
Keep the employer's requirements, dates and relevant correspondence together. Ask which evidence is needed and how it should be submitted. A medical certificate and a leave application serve different purposes.
See Doccio's medical certificate information if a clinical assessment is appropriate. The doctor decides whether a certificate can be issued. For a dispute about leave balances or payment, use Fair Work guidance or relevant workplace advice rather than relying on a clinical document to settle the legal question.

Where to go next
Read medical certificates to understand the relevant service. A doctor decides whether a consultation, examination, referral or another pathway is appropriate for your situation.
