After-hours care
After-hours care explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.
By Doccio Clinical Team · Sources reviewed September 2026
After-hours care is healthcare available outside a service's usual daytime operating period. Different providers and funding arrangements can define those hours differently. The term does not automatically mean a service is open all night, provides emergency treatment or charges the same fee as a daytime appointment. Healthdirect’s after-hours healthcare guide
Match the service to the urgency
For an emergency, call 000. A routine online consultation is not a substitute for emergency assessment. If you are unsure where to seek care, healthdirect offers advice on 1800 022 222 and its Service Finder can help locate services. Healthdirect’s after-hours healthcare guide
Tell the service your current location and the symptoms that make the request urgent. Avoid focusing only on obtaining a certificate or prescription if the underlying illness is becoming more serious. Clinical urgency and administrative timing are different questions.
Check availability and fees separately
An after-hours price does not prove that appointments are available at every hour. Confirm current operating hours, wait information and the consultation format before relying on the service. Also check pharmacy opening hours if a prescription may need dispensing.
Doccio lists business hours as 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday, Sydney time, with doctor consults at $59 in those hours and $79 after hours. Use Sydney time when comparing a booking from another state or territory. Check current pricing and availability. Doccio’s published service pricing
Plan what happens after the consultation
Ask how documents or prescriptions will arrive and what to do if you cannot access them. If the doctor recommends in-person care, clarify where and how urgently. Do not assume every nearby pharmacy is open because the doctor service is available.
Read Doccio's after-hours doctor guide. A doctor decides what care is appropriate. If you have ongoing treatment, arranging routine reviews before supply runs low can reduce administrative pressure, but new or worsening symptoms should always be assessed according to their current urgency.
