Active Script List (ASL) explained in plain English: what it means, what to ask and how it relates to Australian online care.

An Active Script List is a digital list that can help you and authorised health professionals manage active electronic prescriptions. It offers another way to access prescriptions rather than relying only on separate tokens stored in messages. Registration and consent processes apply. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

What problem it can solve

Someone managing several prescriptions may find it difficult to identify the latest token for each one. An ASL can help organise access, but it does not remove the need to understand what has been prescribed or when review is due. Ask your pharmacist whether it is suitable for you.

If you help another person with their medicines, discuss the appropriate consent arrangements. Access should reflect the patient's wishes and the service's requirements. Having access to a phone is not automatically the same as being authorised to manage another person's health information.

Access is not a new prescription

The list does not create additional repeats, extend an expired prescription or guarantee that an item can be supplied. The pharmacist still checks validity and dispensing requirements. A doctor must make any necessary new prescribing decision. Australian Digital Health Agency eScript guidance

Ask how you can review who has access and how to change your preferences. If a prescription appears missing or unexpected, raise the issue with the pharmacist or prescriber rather than assuming the list is a complete clinical record of every treatment you have ever received.

Keep your care information current

Tell clinicians what you actually take, including non-prescription products. A prescription list and an accurate medicine history are related but different: something may have been prescribed without being started, or stopped after later advice.

Read Doccio's eScript information for the token pathway. If you need a new prescription, explain the clinical question as well as any access difficulty. The doctor decides what assessment is appropriate. An ASL can make administration easier, but it cannot replace discussion of effectiveness, unwanted effects, monitoring and the next review date.
